How to become a volunteer: A Step-by-Step Guide

Have you decided to join a volunteer project? Or have you just heard that you can spend anywhere from a few weeks to several months immersed in a local community, contributing to its development while gaining valuable skills?

We’ve prepared a checklist to help you successfully become a volunteer, choose the right work camp, and make sure you have an unforgettable and rewarding experience!

1. Choose your volunteering format
Do you prefer a short-term project (volunteer camp) or a long-term one (two months or more)? Short-term projects offer immersive experiences in a few weeks, while long-term projects allow for deeper involvement and impact.

2. Get in touch with the Supporting Organization
A supporting organization will guide you through the application process and help you prepare for the project. Our team is here to assist with documentation and help you to reflect after volunteering. Feel free to contact us!

3. Explore available projects
Each season brings a variety of volunteer opportunities. Check out the latest project listings, read descriptions, and consider which ones align with your interests and skills. Follow the link to find projects: https://egyesek.hu/en/volunteer-project-search

4. Choose your destination
Pick 2-3 countries where you would love to contribute and immerse yourself in the local community. Consider cultural aspects, climate, and language preferences when making your choice.

5. Select the type of volunteering
Would you like to work with children, participate in environmental initiatives, help with construction, engage in social work, or contribute to cultural projects? Choose a cause that resonates with you.

6. Language requirements
Most volunteer camps use English as the main language of communication, but some may require knowledge of other languages. If you speak additional languages, you might want to choose a country where you can practice them while interacting with locals.

7. Research reviews and past experiences
Look at testimonials, browse photos and videos, and read feedback from previous volunteers to get a better idea of what to expect. You can find helpful insights on this topic in the news section of our website.

8. Check participation conditions
Understand the requirements for each project, including accommodation, meals, travel expenses, and fees. Some international volunteering opportunities are supported by the European Solidarity Corps. It means some costs will be covered.

9. Submit your application
Volunteer projects have limited spots, so don’t wait too long to apply! The earlier you submit your application, the better your chances of securing a place in your preferred project.
Fill out the application form carefully. Be sure to include your motivation—explain why the project interests you, what skills you bring, and how you hope to contribute to the initiative.

10. Wait for confirmation
After submitting your application, wait for confirmation from the outgoing officer. If you are accepted, you will receive an official invitation or approval letter.

11. Arrange travel
Once you receive confirmation, book your tickets. If possible, opt for eco-friendly transportation such as trains or buses instead of flights to minimize your environmental impact.

12. Pack smart
Check the weather forecast and pack accordingly. Bring comfortable clothing, appropriate gear for the project, and any necessary documents.

13. Bring a cultural touch
Consider preparing a recipe for a traditional dish from your country. Sharing food is a great way to connect with other participants and introduce them to your culture. Or if you play musical instruments it would also be great to show your talent to others.

Now you're all set for your volunteering adventure! Get ready to make a positive impact, meet amazing people, and gain valuable experiences.
