My name is Achref Barhoumi, I am 24 years old and originally from Tunisia, currently living in Sopron, Hungary, where I am pursuing a Master’s degree in Economics. Volunteering has always been part of my journey — from being a long-term treasurer for the Tunisian National Children’s Organization. I joined this international workcamp because I wanted to combine my passion for community work with the opportunity to meet people from different cultures and learn new skills outside the classroom.

The Team and the Project:
Our international team of volunteers was full of energy and diversity, coming from different countries and backgrounds but united by the same goal: supporting children’s development and education. The project was organized by a local institution with the support of volunteer networks.

The aim of the camp was to create and hold meaningful programmes for children who come from challenging circumstances. Many of them had never attended school before or only had online classes, which made adapting to regular school life difficult. We supported them by running after-school workshops, day-care activities, language courses, and creative clubs such as art and craft, hip-hop dance, and sports.
In addition to teaching and running activities, we helped with the everyday duties of the institution: preparing lunch, cleaning, and tidying up the new library to make it a welcoming place for the children.

Challenges:
The biggest challenge was working with children who struggled with attention and adaptation due to their backgrounds. It required patience, empathy, and creativity to keep them engaged. At times, language was also a barrier, especially when trying to explain activities. We overcame this by using simple words, body language, and visual demonstrations. Teamwork among volunteers was another powerful solution — we supported each other, shared ideas, and learned from one another’s methods.

Experiences:
Some of the most touching moments came from seeing the children gain confidence. For example, during the hip-hop dance club, even the shyest children slowly joined in, and by the end they were performing with joy. Similarly, the art and craft workshops gave them space to express themselves freely, something many had never experienced before.
This project helped me grow both personally and professionally. I developed teaching, communication, and leadership skills, while also becoming more adaptable and resilient.Screenshot 2026-02-27 at 16.14.27.png

Lessons Learned:
From this project, I learned that small actions can create big changes. Even something as simple as helping a child with homework, or organizing a football game, can build their confidence and encourage them to stay in school.
I also realized that volunteering is not only about giving — it is about receiving. I came home with new skills, friendships, and a deeper understanding of global solidarity and the importance of inclusive education.
Encouragement for Others:
I would highly recommend this type of volunteering to anyone who is considering it. It is a unique opportunity to contribute to the well-being of children while also learning about yourself and the world.
For first-time volunteers, my advice is:
Be patient — progress takes time.
Be creative — children respond best to fun and engaging activities.
Be open-minded — every day brings new lessons.
